THE NAPOLEON DNA PROJECT - The search for descendants of Napoleon

Are you a direct male descendant of Napoleon Bonaparte? The genetic origins analysis of the Napleon-DNA-Profile

Since the beginning of 2010 iGENEA is on the search for male descendants of the Bonaparte family with a large-scale worldwide project.

47 people, who claim to be related to Napoleon have been tested and compared to find genetic similarities.

At the same time, scientists conducted comprehensive DNA tests with a hair sample of Napoleon. The result has been compared with a sample from Charles Napoléon Bonaparte, a descendant of Napoleons brother Jérôme Bonaparte. Both results matched and have been published in the Journal of Molecular Biology Research on 31.12.2011.

Origins analysis "Napoleon Bonaparte"

With the help of a 37 Marker profile and a Deep-Clade test, iGENEA, the institute for origins analysis, has analysed Napoleons origins.

Haplogroup:
Napoleon belonged to haplogroup E-M34. This group originated approximately 7.000 years ago at the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea between and Egypt and Turkey. Today this haplogroup can most frequently be found in Israel, the palestinian territories and Libanon. Also 10% of ashkenazi and sephardic Jews belong to that haplogroup.

Ancient tribe and region of origin:
The profile of Napoleon is rather rare. Similar profiles can be found among sephardic Jews, in Greece and Italy. It is not sure, when Napoleons ancestors moved to Italy from the Near East. They could have sailed across the Mediterranean Sea as phoenician or greek merchants 2.000 to 3.000 years ago. Also a jewish ancestry of Napoleon can not be excluded.

On hint to Napoleons ancestry is already given by the genealogy of his family: One of his ancestors, Francesco Buonaparte, has been called "il Mauro". His ancestors can be traced back to the city of Sarzana in northern Italy. In the the Middle ages this city has frequently been under attack by Saracens who controlled the Mediterranean Sea at this time. Therefore, Napoleons arabian ancestors probably came to Italy during the islamic expansion as conqueror or merchants.

Search for living relatives

iGENEA is looking for people who are descended in the direct paternal line from Napoleon Bonaparte I. The direct male line also includes the following members of the Bonaparte family:

  • Napoléon I. Bonaparte (1769-1821)
  • Napoléon II. Bonaparte (1811-1832)
  • Napoléon III. Bonaparte (1808-1873)
  • Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844)
  • Lucien Bonaparte (1778-1846)
  • Louis Bonaparte (1778-1846)
  • Jérôme Bonaparte (1784-1860)

There are many legends about illegitimate children of men of the Bonaparte family. For the first time, iGENEA offers the possibility, to prove these stories with the help of a DNA test. In our Napoleon DNA project we search for further closest living relatives of the Bonaparte family. To take part in the Napoleon DNA project order one of the following tests. If your profile matches Napoleon's profile in 34 of 37 markers we refund your payment and you receive a further DNA test as an upgrade for free:

The Y chromosome, the male sex chromosome, is passed on from father to son. Every son and male of the same paternal line has the same Y chromosome. If the Y chromosome of two men is the same, it means that they are related and share a common paternal ancestor. The extent of the match (number of common markers) can be used to determine the approximate number of generations that the relationship spans.

Identification of ancient tribes by iGENEA

By Ancient tribes, we refer to peoples from ancient times who are defined not only by their own language, culture and history, but also by their own DNA profile. An origins analysis by iGENEA determines your Ancient tribe by means of your haplogroup and genetic profile. The result refers roughly to the period between 900 BC and 900 AD.
