Recently, I had the pleasure of participating in a DNA analysis carried out by iGENEA, with a primary focus on my family name Dockery, and the results have cast a whole new light on my perception and understanding of my ancestral lineage. The process was pure, science connecting me to my familial past, and helping me uncover both the depth and breadth of my lineage in a way I had never imagined.
The process began with a simple saliva sample, sent to iGENEA in their provided, easy-to-use kit. Although I wanted to uncover the insights hidden in my DNA, I admittedly also started this journey with a sense of skepticism and a pang of unease. Yet, the anxieties vanished as soon as the meticulously compiled, detailed report arrived. The report contained comprehensive information about my ancestral roots, tracing back my Dockery lineage, and providing me with the most cogent view into my family history.
The process disclosed that the Dockery name has Irish roots, specifically linking back to the Gaelic 'Docraigh', derived from 'docair' or 'dochar', which roughly translates to hurt or harm. This intense revelation brought a tidal wave of curiosity, as I imagined my ancestors wielding this ‘dochar’, likely indicative of their occupation.
On delving deeper, it was unveiled that the Dockery surname most probably originated in the region of County Sligo in the western part of Ireland during the medieval times. My ancestors, according to the analysis, were likely amongst those first recorded under this surname around the 15th and 16th centuries, and possible members of the then influential landed gentry.
The DNA analysis also opened up possibilities of belonging to the broader Irish clan groups of the region.
