Unanticipated Discoveries: Unraveling the Deep Roots of My Surname, Reiter, Through iGENEA DNA

Family name Reiter

I recently undertook an iGENEA DNA test, tracing my paternal heritage linked to the Reiter surname. To my immense surprise, I discovered a strong Jewish lineage originating from Eastern and central Europe, intertwined with a robust Scandinavian genetic link. This unexpected journey through my DNA has enriched my understanding of my surname, revealed historical surprises, and shone a new light on the story of my Reiter ancestors.

After submitting my genetic sample to iGENEA for DNA testing, I embarked on an unexpected journey deep into my familial history. Much to my astonishment, I found out that my surname, Reiter, had a deeper historical significance than I'd initially presumed.

The most significant surprise from my DNA test results was the high percentage of Jewish heritage that I had. I didn't anticipate discovering such a robust Jewish lineage considering my family never practiced or identified as Jewish. On closer examination, I learned that my Jewish lineage originates from Eastern and Central Europe, where Sephardic Jews took my surname Reiter during the forced conversions and expulsions in the 15th century.

I discovered that my Reiter ancestors were part of the Sephardic Jews who were forced to convert during the Spanish Inquisition then fled to Eastern Europe. I found it remarkably moving to learn of their trials, their struggle to maintain their identity amidst religious persecution.

Furthermore, it was noteworthy to show a significant genetic link to the Ashkenazi Jewish population, tracing my DNA back to other Reiters spread across Germany and Austria, some of whom were likely victims of the Holocaust.

Another surprising piece of information revealed was a strong genetic link to Scandinavia, mainly Norway and Sweden. Likely, my Reiter ancestors traveled from Eastern Europe to Scandinavia intermingling with the local populace, thereby adding a Scandinavian flavor to my genetic makeup.

Examining the map of my genetic distribution, it was heartening to see regions fading into different hues of blue and green, each representing a percentage of my DNA originating from these areas.

This DNA test from iGENEA turned into an unexpected voyage into my familial heritage. It was a trip riddled with unanticipated twists and turns and poignant moments of introspection. The findings have led to a profound shift in my understanding of my surname, heritage, and the enduring legacy my ancestors left behind.

R. Reiter
