I recently conducted a DNA test with iGENEA, a process that not only unravelled the scientific intricacies involved in genetics but also drew me closer to understanding the historical and geographical origins of my surname - Teske. It piqued my interest in exploring further aspects of my lineage, given that a surname is essentially a single thread in the broader tapestry of ancestry.
I recently had a DNA test completed by iGENEA, intrigued by the scientific aspects and excited at the possibility of gaining a deeper understanding of my ancestry, especially as it relates to my surname - Teske. As a molecular-based test, iGENEA's DNA analysis targets specific regions of chromosomes to pinpoint individual genealogy. The test confirmed that my paternal lineage originates from Northern Europe, specifically the areas that are modern-day Poland and Germany - aligning with the well-known distribution of the surname Teske.
My Y-DNA or paternal line test shows a high concentration of Haplogroup R1b, which is a pattern commonly found in Western Europe. This echoes the dominant theory that the Teske surname started around the area of Pomerania, which straddles modern-day Poland and Germany.
The mtDNA or maternal line test revealed Haplogroup H, common in Europe and often associated with the regions of Scandinavia and the UK. While it doesn't directly relate to the surname Teske, it provides insight into other layers of my ancestry.
From an accuracy standpoint, iGENEA’s DNA tests are said to be pretty reliable. The lab uses state-of-the-art machinery for DNA extraction and sequencing, and the data is reviewed by several geneticists to ensure validity. Nevertheless, it's worth noting that DNA tests can't provide a 100% precise breakdown of heritage due to the complex nature of human migration, intermarriage, and genetic mutation.
